Our very own Changemaker!
In November 2021, Isabel Natividad was selected from hundreds of applicants to attend the Young Changemakers Program at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. The program ran from 30th November to 2nd December 2021 and provided over 200 Young Changemakers with an opportunity to experience living on Campus at Kings College and attend a range of workshops and activities.
The program involved a range of workshops and a project to be completed to introduce Ideas that Create Change. Workshops involved learning about Embracing the Problem, How to Develop Meaningful Ideas, Creating Powerful Solutions and How to Communicate with Impact, and How to Make the Perfect Pitch.
Young Changemakers were divided into a range of teams who were supported by current UQ Students who acted as mentors during the three-day program. Isabel’s team was focused on Healthcare’s Hidden Heroes, a Biotechnology and Engineering project. The team first learned from Dr Mark Allenby as he explained current approaches to grow blood within the laboratory using biomedical engineering, tissue engineering, and stem cells. The team was then broken into smaller groups and tasked with the job of designing a blood manufacturing platform to provide fresh blood to sick patients.
Isabel’s team was selected to present their idea on the final day of the program to an audience of over 200, and a prestigious panel of judges that included an entrepreneur, who had attended UQ, and University of Queensland lecturers and staff. Isabel and her team were awarded the 'Best Pitch' for the program.
It was a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends with shared interests, create solutions to the world’s challenges, as well as practice collaboration and leadership skills. Isabel thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to gain new skills and make connections with University of Queensland staff and mentors, presenters, and other Young ChangeMakers from across Australia.

School-based Apprenticeship/Traineeship Student Profile
Grade: 12
Employer: Akooramak Home for the Aged and Nursing Home
Qualification: Certificate III in Individual Support
How did you find out about your school-based traineeship? I did work experience at Akooramak Home for the Aged in September 2020, whilst in Year 10. After this week, a traineeship opportunity become available, and Mrs Porter talked to me about making an application.
What do you enjoy about your SBAT? I really enjoy all the work I do, and the residents I care for. The connections I have with the residents makes the job very enjoyable.
What topics or areas are you learning and studying in your SBAT? Supporting independence and wellbeing, recognising healthy body systems, following safe work practices and direct client care, working with diverse people, providing individualised support, communicating and working in health and community services, facilitating the interest and rights of clients, working legally and ethically, facilitating the empowerment of elderly people, and complying with infection prevention, control measures and procedures.
What are your hopes for the future? Where do you see yourself in 3-10 years? I plan on finishing university to become a fully qualified registered nurse (RN), and possibly even become a midwife.
What personal qualities would you say are most important to have in the workplace? I believe that it is imperative for someone working in aged care to be mature, compassionate, and empathetic. They should also display a good work ethic and show initiative. Without these qualities, the care you provide to the residents is limited.
If students would like to experience working in a career that they are interested in, they can see Mrs Porter or Mrs Bacon in the Careers office (room 104). The Careers Department assist students with the process, including choosing pathways best suited to their career path and preparing them with work skills to make the experience both enjoyable and successful.

CSIRO Circular Fibres Pitchathon
Fibres and textiles are fundamental to how well humans live and flourish. There are impacts of fibres and textiles on people, the environment, and economies – positive and negative. There are also big changes in how fibres and textiles are made, used, and disposed of. There are now shifts towards closed-loop systems, away from linear-systems, in resource flow and energy use.
Open to High School, and TAFE/Undergraduate students, the Pitchathon is a challenge to generate and pitch an idea for sustainable fibres and textiles. In a 3 minute pitch video, share your ideas for:
· Redesigning fibres
· Lessons from First Nations
· Tracking fibre lifecycles
· Fibre waste
The Pitchathon opens Tuesday 15 March and closes Monday 2 May. Find out more: https://events.csiro.au/Events/2022/February/8/Threads-and-Opportunities
