University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand (UCAT ANZ)
The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT ANZ) is an admissions test used by the UCAT ANZ Consortium of universities in Australia and New Zealand for their medical, dental, and clinical science degree courses.
The test helps universities to select applicants with the most appropriate abilities and professional behaviours required for new doctors and dentists to be successful in their clinical careers. It is mandatory for entry into many medical, dental and clinical university courses and is used in collaboration with other admissions processes such as interviews and academic qualifications.
For any current Year 12 students intending to apply to university for medical or dental courses in 2023 it is vitally important that they check if the UCAT is required for admission to their preferred courses. Students can check this at Universities | UCAT Consortium or with individual universities.
Students are required to sit the UCAT ANZ 2022 test (between 1 July and 12 August 2022) if they are intending to apply for university entry in 2023. Bookings to sit the 2022 UCAT are being taken now and close 17 May 2022 at 11:59pm AEST.
For more information and UCAT bookings visit University Clinical Aptitude Test for Australia and New Zealand (UCAT ANZ) | UCAT Consortium.
Guidelines for Employment
Many students are employed in casual work and whilst our College careers lessons provide an introduction to working rights and responsibilities, it is important for students and families to know the law and guidelines for children employed in Queensland. Some important information is listed below and is taken from the Queensland Government - Business Queensland website. https://www.business.qld.gov.au/
Guidelines include:
- The Child Employment Act 2006 prohibits the employment of children below the ages specified in the Child Employment Regulation 2016.
- Generally the minimum age for employment is 13. This is lowered to 11 where the child carries out supervised delivery work that involves delivering newspapers, advertising material or similar items between the hours of 6:00am and 6:00pm.
- On a school day, a school-aged child can work a maximum of 4 hours. When they are not required to attend school they can work a maximum of 8 hours.
- A distinction is also made between the maximum hours a school-aged child can work during a school week and a non-school week. A school week starts on a Sunday, when the child is required to attend school on any day of that week. During a school week a school-aged child can work a maximum of 12 hours. During a non-school week a school-aged child can work a maximum of 38 hours.
- In addition to the prohibition on employing school-aged children, when they are required to be at school, an employer must not allow a school-aged or young child to work between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am. A further restriction prohibits children between the ages of 11 and 13 years from carrying out delivery work between the hours of 6:00pm and 6:00am.
There are more details about any exceptions, guidelines for breaks and shifts and other details at the Business Queensland website https://www.business.qld.gov.au/.

School-based Apprenticeship/Traineeship Student Profile
Grade: 12
Employer: Clifton Auto Ag Repairs
Qualification: Certificate III in Light Vechicle Mechanical Technology
How did you find out about your school-based traineeship? My Year 10 work experience placement was with an electrician. I really enjoyed the experience but wanted to explore other trades. I approached Paul Morris, owner of Clifton Auto Ag Repairs, to see if I could do some work experience over the Christmas school holidays. I thoroughly enjoyed my work there and did some more work over the holidays. Paul contacted me a few weeks later and offered me a school-based apprenticeship with his business.
What do you enjoy about your SBAT? Learning all aspects of the mechanical trade and working with a group of people that have similar interests to me. I really enjoy the diversity of the trade, from working on trucks to farming equipment, small vechicles to large industrial generators.
What are your hopes for the future? Where do you see yourself in 3-10 years? After completing the Light Vehicle Mechanical trade, I would like to complete a dual trade in Heavy Diesel Mechanical. I would like to go farming and use my knowledge of the two trades in this industry.
What personal qualities would you say are most important to have in the workplace? I believe it is important to have a good work ethic. If you work hard at something, you will reap the rewards. It is important to demonstrate attention to detail when working on equipment. You have to be able to communicate effectively with all different types of people and provide the best customer service possible.
If students would like to experience working in a career that they are interested in, they can see Mrs Porter or Mrs Bacon in the Careers office (room 104). The Careers Department assist students with the process, including choosing pathways best suited to their career path and devloping their work skills to ensure their experience is both enjoyable and successful.
