School-based Apprenticeship/Traineeship Student Profile
Grade: 11
Employer: Kent Saddlery, Stanthorpe
Qualification: Certificate III in Leather Production
How did you find out about your school-based traineeship? I requested to come on board with the Kent Saddlery team as an apprentice after I had an absolutely brilliant time at my work experience last September.
What do you enjoy about your SBAT? Absolutely everything, I love the work (I would do it for free any day of the week), I love the people and the community, the area and work environment. I love everything about it.
What topics or areas are you learning and studying in your SBAT? I am in the saddle department, so I am usually tasked with making small bits and pieces that attach to the saddle or pieces that are needed to create the final product, so things like stirrup treads, that go on every saddle, are something that I make almost every week. I am also working with ropes, and I frequently make the rope headcollars, leads or reins.
What personal qualities would you say are most important to have in the workplace? A grateful and positive outlook, and energy. For me it is really easy to show how happy I am to be there, because I am. Every week I am that excited to go there that I can’t help but smile at everyone. I’ve found that a smile can get you so many places. Also, I think a willingness to learn is very important, even if it’s something that you have been doing for the last three weeks, if someone offers you advice, take it and be grateful for it.
What advice would you give other students about SBATs, and employment and training? I would offer two pieces of advice. The first would be just go for it, there is a trial period and during that time you can make up your mind with whether or not you’re going to keep going at it. It is better to have tried and found that you didn’t like it than not try and forever wonder what could have been. My second piece of advice would be that like I said, work hard, be positive, be grateful and good things will happen for you. If you do, you might get offered an SBAT or a job and people will like being around and working with you.
If students would like to experience working in a career that they are interested in, they can see Mrs Porter or Mrs Bacon in the Careers office (room 104). The Careers Department assists students with the process, including choosing pathways best suited to their career path and preparing them with work skills to make the experience both enjoyable and successful.
