Year 10 SET (Senior Education & Training) Plans
Parents/Guardians of Year 10 students have been invited to meet with their child and a member of the College Leadership Team to discuss career and study interests, including pathways and subject selection for Years 11 and 12.
Assumption College reviews these plans several times throughout the course of the students' senior schooling. This is done in order to ensure individualised success in whatever pathway the students choose.
The purpose of a SET (Senior Education & Training) plan is to help students:
- set and achieve their learning goals after Year 10
- include flexible and coordinated pathway options in their course of senior study
- think about their education, training and career options after Year 12 and make decisions about their learning pathways
- structure their learning around their abilities, interests, and ambitions
- communicate with their parents, teachers and career guidance officers about their learning pathways and post-school plans.” (www.qcaa.qld.edu.au)
If the scheduled date and time allocated does not suit, please contact the College office on 07 4660 4000 to arrange a more suitable time.
Queensland Training Awards
Left to right: Mrs Alison Porter (ACW Career Development Practitioner), Josephine Beveridge (Award nominee), Mrs Liisa Hammond (ACW Principal), Mrs Karen Coulston (Manager: TCSO School-based Apprenticeships)
The regional finals of the 2022 Queensland Training Awards were recently held in Dalby. These awards are held to highlight and honor the talented people that complete vocational education, apprenticeships and traineeships.
The regional awards celebrate the high achieving apprentices, trainees, vocational students and employers from the Darling Downs and South West Queensland. The individuals that are regional finalists are those that have demonstrated high achievement and hard work. Our College is proud to announce that Year 12 student, Josephine Beveridge (Joey), is one of the regional finalists.
Joey is completing her traineeship in Certificate III in Individual Support at Akooramak Care of Older Persons and has demonstrated excellence in her pursuit of this qualification and the work that she undertakes in her traineeship.
Assumption College would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Josephine Beveridge on making it to the regional finals as one of three young people nominated as school-based trainee or apprentice of the year in the Darling Downs and South West.
School-based Apprenticeship/Traineeship Student Profile
Grade: 11
Employer: Wickham Freight Lines
Qualification: Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology
How did you find out about your school-based traineeship? I found out about my school-based apprenticeship by talking to my careers teacher about currently available heavy diesel apprenticeships in the Warwick area.
What do you enjoy about your SBAT? I enjoy working with great people and learning something new every week.
What advice would you give other students about SBATs, and employment and training?: Show the employer that you are interested in working for them and that you want to pursue that career. Have a good work ethic, be respectful and show some initiative.
What are your hopes for the future? Where do you see yourself in 3-10 years? I hope that I will be a qualified heavy diesel mechanic working at Wickham Freight Lines or up at the Northern Territory with my own mobile mechanic business.
What personal qualities would you say are most important to have in the workplace? In my opinion, the most desirable personal qualities to have when working in any workplace is to have a great work ethic, be respectful to everyone, and be open to learning.
In conclusion: I would like to say that a school-based apprenticeship will be a great help to anyone that has intentions of becoming a tradesperson, not only does it teach you important skills for your trade but it also gives you a taste of what life is like outside of school.
I also chose to complete work experience at Wickham Freight Lines because I wanted to know what it was like to work as a heavy diesel mechanic for a week before I decided to jump straight into an apprenticeship.
Year 10 Work Experience - Reminder
Many of our Year 10 students have organised their placements for the work experience week at the end of this term (12 - 16 September 2022). The work experience block is programmed with the aim of supporting students to develop work skills and gain some knowledge of careers interests as part of our broader and ongoing careers curriculum. This is an invaluable opportunity for students to gain ‘hands on’ experience to help them with upcoming decisions around their education and careers plans and goals. Year 10 students were provided with an information pack last term.
We ask those students experiencing any difficulty in finding a placement to talk to their careers class teacher or our College Careers Department as soon as possbile. Work experience agreement forms for placements are now overdue.
