RSA & RGS COURSE
11 March 2024
Year 12 students attended the annual ‘University Showcase’. The University Showcase is a collective display of institutions visiting local high schools to provide tertiary education information to young people. It included a short presentation by touring university representatives and other tertiary education providers. The presentation encompassed both a freestyle presentation and an expo style component. Each represented institution presented a different topic such as student life, costs, scholarships, how to apply and securing accommodation.
This was then followed by a small expo for students to meet institution representatives and collect information. Students were able to obtain information about university and tertiary pathways and ask any questions they had about education and training after Year 12.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships
Information about School-based Traineeships & Apprenticeships (SATs)
Information as at 6 March 2024 at School-based apprenticeships and traineeships | Education and training | Queensland Government (www.qld.gov.au)
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs) allow high school students (in Years 10, 11 or 12) to earn a wage, train towards a nationally recognised qualification and study towards their Queensland Certificate of Education at the same time.
Traineeships
A school-based traineeship usually takes 2–4 years for a student to complete, depending on when they start it and the type and level of the qualification. If it isn't completed before school graduation, the traineeship can continue by converting to part-time or full-time and continuing to work with the employer until completed.
Apprenticeships
Students can't complete their apprenticeship during high school because apprenticeships take longer than that; but an apprenticeship can be started at school, converted to part-time or full-time after graduation and completed after another 2–3 years.
For example, if a student starts a 4-year full-time apprenticeship at the start of Year 11, they will usually have finished 1-year full-time equivalent by graduation (because school-based apprenticeships take twice as long). To continue it after school, students need to do approximately another 3 years full-time. So, in total, it may take 5 years to complete.
Minimum Age
High school students must be in Year 10, 11 or 12. School-based apprentices in electrotechnology must be in Year 11 or 12.
Apprenticeships and traineeships can start before Year 10, but this requires a special business case. Contact Apprenticeships Info before commencing.
Learn more about:
Permission
Students must have:
- support from their school
- permission from their parent or guardian, if under 18.
Schooling
Students must be enrolled and/or registered in Years 10 to 12.
Work Hours
Trainees and apprentices are required to work at least 7.5 hours a week, averaged over every 3 months, for every 12 months of their training contract. Each training contract includes a minimum number of hours that must be met in the traineeship or apprenticeship.
Apprentices in the electrotechnology industry are required to work more hours.
Learn more about required working hours.
On-The-Job Training
A training organisation will work with the trainee/apprentice and their employer to develop a training plan, which describes what, when and how training will be delivered and assessed.
Training may be:
- online, with a trainer checking in regularly
- at work, with an on-site trainer
- in a class at a training organisation, like TAFE.
Attendance at Training
Depending on the apprenticeship or traineeship and training organisation, training may be completed:
- online during a spare period at school each week
- in the workplace, with a trainer who visits regularly
- with other students in a class environment on campus, either 1 or more days a week, or for a block (e.g. a 2-week block of classes).
Training and The QCE
Training may count towards final Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credit points. Credits are based on the number of 'competencies'—knowledge or skills completed and/or the number of hours worked.
For more information about QCE credits, refer to the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA).
The Cost
Some traineeships and apprenticeships may cost. This cost will depend on the price of the training organisation delivering the training and may be paid by the student or the employer. Some apprenticeships and traineeships may be fully or partially funded by the government.
Who Is Involved
SATs are a training contract between:
- the student (and your parent/guardian if applicable)
- the student's school
- an employer
- a training organisation
- an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) provider.
To commence, the student and parents/guardians sign a training contract with the chosen employer. This is a formal agreement that is lodged and monitored by the Department of Youth Justice, Employment, Small Business and Training.
Read about each party's role and responsibilities.
