- UniPrep is a pathway to most UniSQ undergraduate degrees for high school students; focusing on developing academic skills to prepare students for transition to university.
- UniPrep is an ideal program for Year 11 or Year 12 students who:
- want an introduction to how to study at university level
- want to find out more about university
- fall short of a required ATAR or didn’t do the subjects needed for the degree of choice and want to go to university
- are unsure if their ATAR will get them into the UniSQ degree they want to study.
- This is a free program for Year 11 and 12 students who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens residing in Australia, or a Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder.
- Successful completion of UniPrep provides students with the English subject pre-requisite required for UniSQ degrees and ensures they are eligible to apply for a range of specified UniSQ undergraduate degrees. On successful completion of UniPrep, students will also be eligible for 2 QCE points.
- This program is funded through the Australian government’s Higher Education Participation and Partnership Program to promote equality of opportunity in higher education to people from a low socio-economic background, regional and remote areas and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Entry Schemes
Universities usually offer entry schemes to help specific groups of students to gain admission. Each university decides which students they want to capture, but the groups they target might include: high achievers; those from diverse or disadvantaged backgrounds; students from rural areas, those who attend ‘partner schools’; or ones who are elite athletes or performers, and so on. Entry schemes generally offer adjusted academic requirements and/or broader admission criteria such as personal qualities, leadership experience, or community involvement to applicants.
Pathways
The word ‘pathway’ is often used as an umbrella term to describe the journey from one career stage to the next, however, a ‘pathway to university’ refers to a structured program or course designed to help students transition from school to university. This is achieved by providing additional support or preparation, if potential applicants haven’t met the entry requirements. These may be designed and run by the university, or be in the form of VET Certificate or Diploma courses. Upon successful completion of a pathway program, students can often progress directly into a degree.
Early Offers
Most Australian universities allow Year 12 students to apply for ‘early offers’, but navigating these schemes is tricky because each university’s program has a different name, application process, and admission criteria. Here’s a broad breakdown to help clarify things.
What is an ‘early offer’? Admission into a course before receiving Year 12 results.
How do students apply? Directly through the university’s application portal, through the state’s Tertiary Admission Centre, or in some cases apply through both.
How is an application assessed? Applications may be assessed based upon Year 11 results, a recommendation from school, involvement in extra-curricular activities, and/or other criteria set by each university.
Is an early offer guaranteed? In some cases, yes, however, most early offers are ‘conditional’ meaning applicants still need to meet admission criteria set by the university before an offer becomes ‘unconditional’ and enrolment can happen. The criteria varies, but often includes successfully competing the QCE, achieving a certain ATAR or subject prerequisites and other course requirements. Universities will start releasing early offers in September.
University Entry Schemes & Pathways
The 2025 University Entry Schemes and Pathways directory, published by Career Tools, summarises the early offer programs for Australian universities.
This directory has been emailed to Year 12 students. They can click on the name of a university they are interested in for an overview of the early offer program and a snapshot of its requirements. Each page links out to full details about the program, and with links to the institution’s other entry schemes and pathway programs.
This is a good place for students to start exploring the vast array of entry programs on offer and to quickly get an idea of what they may be eligible to apply for. It will also show when and how to apply, and what students need to get applications started. Be sure to also connect with the Careers department for the best support and advice for personal circumstances and tailored application advice.
