Gospel Mark 13: 24-32

This Gospel speaks of the coming of the Son of Man and the signs that will precede it. When we recontextualise this Gospel for our current context, it fits very well. Mark speaks about the stress, chaos and uncertainty that times of change bring. The challenges and upheavals that come can seem overwhelming and yet also exciting. Through this Gospel, we are given the assurance that despite the chaos and even in the deepest moments of turmoil, there is hope; there is a divine plan and a promise of support and protection.

The image and analogy of the fig tree are incredibly apt given the 2024 theme from our Year 12 cohort being Sower of Seeds. The fig tree reminds us that we need to be observant and discern the signs around us. Through the fig tree, we are asked to recognise that change and chaos are a part of life’s journey; however, for a full and flourishing life, so too are our values of justice, compassion, generosity and wisdom.

Farewell to the 2024 Senior Cohort

Last week, we had the privilege of farewelling a cohort of students who have led our College over the past year.

Over the course of three days, we had the opportunity to have fun, reflect, and celebrate the several milestones that this group of exceptional young men and women achieved during their time at the College.

This senior group demonstrated remarkable resilience, dedication and spirit. They navigated challenges and introduced so many initiatives with grace and determination that enriched our community and left a lasting legacy.

Having excelled in so many areas – their theme of ‘Sower of Seeds’ was a fitting metaphor for the journey that saw the seeds of wisdom, compassion, generosity and justice come to fruition. You have nurtured these seeds with hard work and dedication.

We thank our 2024 Seniors for all they have done and we look forward to celebrating their future successes. Be safe and be wise.

Farewell Staff

As we approach the end of another remarkable year at Assumption College Warwick, we find ourselves reflecting on the incredible journey we have shared. So, at this time of year, we inevitably must bid a heartfelt farewell to some of our esteemed college members who have dedicated so much of their time, energy and passion to our college community.

Cate TunstallCatherine_Tunstall_2024.jpg

Cate has filled so many roles within her four years at the College, from Curriculum Leader of Mathematics to Program Leader of Data and IT, back to Curriculum Leader of Mathematics and, our well-regarded photographer. Of course, her most notable role has been that of teacher of Mathematics. Cate has provided so much of her time and expertise not only to her students but also to our staff. A strong advocate for students having access to quality learning experiences, Cate has been instrumental in ensuring that key classrooms have hearing loop access, and that our cultural students have access to quality sound equipment. Cate’s generosity in giving these gifts to the College has only been surpassed by her generosity of spirit and willingness to go above and beyond to ensure our students’ success – you will be missed, Cate.

Sathumi WijesooriyaSathumi_Wijesooriya_2024.jpg

Otherwise known fondly as Miss W! Sathumi has been the driving force of ACW’s cultural explosion. Sathumi’s list of credits is so long and includes all aspects of the cultural life of the College, including the incredible ACW Showcases, the enthusiastic celebrations of the Senior Music students, the Concert Band, Jazz Band, Junior House Band, and Senior House Band. Sathumi’s legacy inspires and sustains the musical soul of not only our students but also our staff, with the addition of several musically minded staff members. It's not only the hills that are alive with music, but also the courtyards, the classrooms, Assumption Hall and St James’ Hall, not to mention the Town Hall and the streets. Of course, those who have been taught by Miss W know that her numeracy isn’t simply counting the beat, as she also began her journey as a teacher of Mathematics at ACW. For the past four years, Assumption College has been blessed by Miss W’s presence and the joy she has inspired. Thank you, Sathumi.

Denise DewhurstDenise_Dewhurst_2024.jpg

Denise is quite simply an exceptional educator. Her ability to inspire her students is truly exceptional, whether it is to analyse a Shakespearean tragedy articulately or to showcase our senior male students' coordination and musical talents to the tune of ‘Grease Lightning’. Denise is a wise woman who has changed the lives of many of our students through her willingness to share her stories and her capacity to sit and listen to others. Whilst we will miss Denise immensely, it is absolutely true that she has earned the right to sit beside the river and sip her drinks at her leisure. Enjoy retirement Denise, and remember that Grease is always the word.

Brady RetallickBrady_Retallick_2024.jpg

After the excitement of Mr Retallick’s return from China, he is off again – this time, slightly closer – Toowoomba. In the short time that Brady has returned to ACW, he once again wholeheartedly and humbly gave of his time, wisdom and talents. As our Year 8 Pastoral Leader, Mr Retallick has literally and figuratively supported our students to overcome mountains, walking beside and encourage all those in his year levels. Instrumental in ACW’s win for the Rodeo Parade, through the construction of the iconic boot and blooms symbol, and extremely handy when it comes to BBQing, Mr Retallick is always there any time that support is needed. His beautiful contribution to St Mary’s Kindergarten Yarning Circle is just another example of how Brady quietly contributes. Downlands College is exceptionally lucky to have Mr Retallick on their staff for 2025; however, ACW still gets to hang on to Bianca Retallick – so that is definitely a win!

Natalia WebbNatalia_Webb_2024.jpg

As many of you may know, Nat has been offered a contract with the Penrith Panthers for 2025/2026. An opportunity too amazing to pass up. At this time, Nat will only be gone for a period of one (1) year, and for this year, we wish Ms Webb every success as she pursues her dreams and aspirations. For those who have been in Nat’s PC or HPE and Business classes, we know that she is a talented teacher who has been an integral part of our College’s sporting life. Nat inspires both students and colleagues with her dedication, uncompromising standards and unwavering commitment to resilience and excellence.

Whilst Ms Webb’s absence will certainly be felt, we look forward to cheering you on from the sidelines, celebrating your courage to follow your dreams and supporting you as you strive to attain those dreams; however, we look forward to celebrating your return to ACW.

May our Mother Mary grant her blessings upon our College Community.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal

Patrick_Donnelly_2024.jpg

The time has ended, and what has been accomplished this year is outstanding. Over the past few weeks, we have seen students, staff and other members of the community come together to donate to the Christmas Appeal. The 2025 Faith and Social Justice Leader Abby Hammond with her other College and House Leaders worked really well to encourage their houses. All Houses did so well, however Donovan did have by far the most donations made. Congratulations to Donovan!

This appeal does not end here. At our Christmas Liturgy, we were honoured to have Amanda and Samara attend to accept these gifts on behalf of the St Vincent de Paul Society. We know that this organisation works in many different aspects of our community and will continue to work with the support of donations and volunteers.

Advent season and Christmas

Christmas is not merely a day marked on our calendars; it is the culmination of a journey that begins with Advent, a season of anticipation and preparation.

Advent, derived from the Latin word "adventus," meaning "coming," is a time when we prepare our hearts and minds for the arrival of Jesus Christ. It is a period of waiting, hope, and reflection. During these four weeks, we light the Advent candles, each representing a different aspect of our faith journey: hope, peace, joy, and love. These candles remind us of the light that Christ brings into the world, dispelling the darkness and filling our lives with His divine presence.

As we move through Advent, we are called to prepare ourselves spiritually for the birth of our Savior. This preparation involves more than just decorating our homes or buying gifts; it is about opening our hearts to God's love and grace. It is a time to seek forgiveness, to mend broken relationships, and to extend kindness and compassion to those around us. Advent invites us to slow down, to pause amidst the busyness of our lives, and to focus on the true meaning of Christmas.

As we have seen, this year at Assumption College, we have been preparing ourselves for this time by participating in the St Vincent de Paul Christmas appeal. We have also been preparing our Pastoral Care classes Grass Head in the theme of Christmas.

Christmas itself is a celebration of the incarnation, the moment when God became man in the person of Jesus Christ. It is a reminder of God's immense love for humanity, a love so great that They sent Their only Son to live among us, to teach us, and ultimately, to save us. The birth of Jesus in a humble stable in Bethlehem is a powerful symbol of God's desire to be close to us, to share in our joys and sorrows, and to offer us the gift of eternal life.

As we celebrate this sacred season, let us remember that Christmas is not just about the past event of Jesus' birth, but also about His continual presence in our lives today. It is a time to renew our commitment to living out the values that Jesus taught us: love, compassion, humility, and generosity. Let us embrace the spirit of Christmas by reaching out to those in need, by sharing our blessings, and by being a light in the lives of others.

Rugby 7's Competition

Congratulations to the Assumption College u15 Boys Rugby 7’s team that competed in the Toowoomba Southwest Rugby 7’s tournament during Term 4. For the majority of our players, this was their first experience playing any format of Rugby Union so they all were able to learn some new skills and they thoroughly enjoyed playing a new game.

The team performed exceptionally well considering it was their first time ever playing. They competed against some experienced schools including Downlands and Toowoomba Grammar throughout the campaign.

During Week 7, the team played in the Finals Series. The team lost their first final fixture by 1 try to deny them an opportunity to play in the grand final; however, the team was able to defeat Toowoomba Grammar in the 3rd v 4th Play off Final to finish 3rd overall. This is a great achievement and the College is immensely proud.

Special thank you to our Senior Students Harry Hume, Abby Hammond and Lachan Bruton who all coached this team.

Celebrating Our Senior Students with a Musical Farewell

We are thrilled to share the highlights of our recent Senior Farewell, where our talented music students and dedicated staff delivered an unforgettable performance. Thursday lunch was marked by a surprise combined performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody” by the Senior House Band, Junior House Band, Vocal Ensemble, and Concert Band. This incredible collaboration left the audience in awe and was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, who rehearsed this piece in secret to ensure it was a surprise for our Year 12s.

A special thank you goes to all of the students involved, who worked incredibly hard to put this performance together. We also want to thank Esther Hohenheim for her exceptional coordination of this effort and her incredible work with the Senior House Band. Her leadership and passion have been instrumental in guiding our senior musicians to new heights. We also extend our gratitude to Sathumi Wijesooriya for her wonderful work with the Junior Concert Band, nurturing the talents of our younger musicians and preparing them for future success. Our heartfelt thanks to Kodey Brims for her enthusiasm and dedication in running the Vocal Ensemble. Her energy and commitment have inspired our vocalists to achieve excellence. Additionally, we are grateful to Aaron Buchanan for his outstanding leadership of the Concert Band, ensuring that our instrumentalists performed at their very best.

We also want to acknowledge the students who provided the drumline performance for the guard of honour. Their spirited performance added a unique and special touch to the farewell, making it a memorable send-off for our Year 12 cohort.

Looking ahead, we are excited about the incredible music opportunities that await ACW students in 2025. With such a talented and dedicated community, we are confident that our music program will continue to thrive and inspire.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the Senior Farewell a resounding success. Your hard work and passion for music are truly appreciated.

Supanova

On Friday 8 November 2024, excited students and teachers journeyed to Supanova at the Brisbane Convention Centre. The Supanova Convention is inspired by imaginary worlds emanating from comics, sci-fi, fantasy, anime, gaming, nostalgia, literature and science, creating an event to celebrate creativity and culture. Students experienced presentations from notable speakers such as Matthew Riley, saw stalls run by local artists and businesses, and experienced esports and gaming with other school students through participating in Minecraft and Super Smash Bros. games. We also met impressive cosplayers and spoke with them about how they made their outfits! Miss Quinn was very excited to meet another teacher dressed as Ms. Frizzle! Overall, it was a fun and colourful experience, and we all learned a lot.

End of year book return

As we approach the end of the year, the textbooks have started returning to us. We are so grateful to everyone for looking after their textbooks and promptly returning them. With all this rain around, we urge students to return what they are no longer using and keep the books they still need safe and dry so they can continue to be used.

Year 10 and 11 End-of-Year Celebrations

During Wednesday Wellbeing, the Year 10 and 11 students came together for a BBQ and activities to signify the merging of these two cohorts as the Assumption College Seniors of 2025. The Year 10s were welcomed into the senior cohort by being presented with a mini College Blazer keyring by the Year 11 House Leaders. All students were reminded that, whilst individually they have the capacity to generate their own level of success, as cohesive College leaders they have the capacity to create an energy and legacy within the community that fosters College spirit and connection for a lifetime.
