Gospel John 10: 27-30 - Good Shepherd Sunday

This Sunday was Good Shepherd Sunday. It is a day that has universally been recognised as being entirely appropriate given that it is the first Sunday that our new Pope, Pope Leo XIV, is our Shepherd of the Church.

Whilst there is much spoken via the media and social media about the procedure of electing a new Pope, what is less explored is the understanding that the Pope is believed to be chosen by God through the cardinals. We believe the Holy Spirit works through the College of the Cardinals during the conclave. Whilst voting is a human process, spiritual discernment is central to the process. The cardinals spend time in prayer, seeking wisdom and guidance. Through this reflection, God inspires the hearts and minds of the cardinals to select the one who is called to serve as the Successor of Saint Peter. Therefore, the Pope is called by God through the Church to lead, teach and unify us.

Importantly, we recognise that popes are human. The interviews with Pope Leo’s brothers were the most telling of this humanness. Stories of him growing up and how his brothers used to tease him about becoming Pope because, as a boy, he would pretend to officiate Mass allow us to revel in the ordinary. This does not make our new Pope less sacred; it ensures his relatedness. It highlights that God can work through us all and that the Pope has accepted a calling to lead his flock with humility, wisdom and faithfulness – such as his predecessor Francis did.

Looking towards the future, just as some of our Year 7s asked, what will the new Pope be like? The first words Pope Leo XIV spoke were the same as those we reflected on in our last newsletter. Peace be with you – the same words that Jesus said to the disciples when he appeared to them after his resurrection. Peace be with you - in moments of fear, of doubt, of uncertainty. Peace be with you – have courage and fear not. Pope Leo XIV finished his address by speaking of a vision and a mission for us all to seek together, (we must be) a missionary Church, a Church that builds bridges, dialogue, always open to welcome … and much like the charism of the Order of Saint Augustine we approach all with veritas and Caritas – Truth and Love.

Start of Term 2 – with a bang not a whimper

Term 2 has had a fabulously chaotic start. With so many events crammed in, it is hard to keep track of all that has been achieved in such a short time frame. It is important that we take the time to reflect on recent events and thank the staff who made the events such a wonderful success and celebration of our community.

Year 12 Formal

Such great thanks go to our Senior Pastoral Leader, Codie Ellis, for a beautiful celebration. Others we need to thank are Theresa Bourke, Kate Santo and Stevie Meerdink for their hard work. We thank Greg Convery for his time and energy in teaching the dances and etiquette of the evening; it is so greatly appreciated. Thank you, Pat Donnelly and Bianca Retallick, for their witty repartee and John Hodder for his efforts in photography. Thank you to Donna Williams and the students who gave their time to serve our Year 12 students and their families. Thank you also to all the staff who volunteered on the night – the efforts of all were so clearly valued and ensured that the evening was one of elegance and joy and befitting the theme of Light the Lanterns.

Cross Country and March Charge

Having been postponed at the end of last term, the 2025 Cross Country and Donovan House charity activity – the March Charge, were held at the beginning of Term 2. Congratulations to Program Leader Sports, Tom Duggan, and Donovan House Leaders Amy Ryan and Hannah Hamilton, who ensured our community enjoyed a fabulous day. Congratulations also go to McAuley House for gaining Champion Cross Country House for 2025 and Romero House for earning the Lee Gunderman Spirit Award for Cross Country 2025.

ANZAC Day Liturgy, ANZAC Day Dawn Service and March

Many thanks to Riley Salter and Pat Donnelly for their work and delivery of yet another sacred ANZAC Day Liturgy. The liturgy was made more poignant with the playing of the Last Post on a bugle by Faith and Social Justice Leader Abby Hammond in recognition of her family’s service and sacrifice over the past 100+ years. Thank you also goes to our College and House Leaders and the many other students who joined the Warwick community at the Dawn Service and the March.

We would also like to recognise Shane Walker's contribution to the delivery of the keynote address and his time helping the staff and students of Assumption College prepare for the liturgy.

#Do It for Dolly Day

Congratulations to Rice House leaders Jack Coleman and Ashton Costello; on Friday, 9 May 2025, these leaders undertook the call to raise awareness and take action against bullying. With a visual display of words and blue butterflies, these leaders encouraged us all to work together to prevent bullying within our community and support those affected by it.

Mercy Shield

Congratulations to the Senior Rugby League and Senior Netball teams for their achievements at the Mercy Shield. The Rugby League team were runners up for the carnival, and the Netball team returned with the shield for the first time; it was a great display of sportspersonship, camaraderie and grit. Thank you to Tom Duggan, Dimity Gardner, Jack Duggan and Lexi Lever for the gift of their time and expertise.

Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences and CANVAS Sessions

Many thanks to all the parents and students who engaged in our conferences. The opportunity for dialogue, specifically relating to your child’s learning progress, is such a vital part of their educational journey. These conferences were further enhanced through the introduction of Live Feedback. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Anna Hardy and Pat Donnelly for their presentations and assistance to parents in setting up their CANVAS observers accounts.

Mothers’ Day Breakfast

Assumption College celebrated Mother’s Day on Friday, 9 May 2025. We sincerely thank Kimberley Nelson for her organisation of this event, as well as Marita Lunney, who started preparations before her departure. Once again, there were so many volunteers, including staff and students, who joined together to celebrate the significant women in our students’ lives. With over 230 breakfasts enjoyed, these events are such an important part of our culture.

The 2026 Year 12 Formal

A review of the timing of the Year 12 Formal was undertaken by the College. This included current Year 12 students, Year 11 parents and the members of the College’s and Middle Leadership Teams. After a final survey, it has been determined that in 2026, the Year 12 Formal will return to an end-of-year event and celebration. This will replace the Valedictory Dinner that was introduced to the College in 2020 owing to a lifting of the then COVID restrictions.

We thank all the people involved in deciding the best time to host this important event and look forward to sharing further news relating to this event in the coming weeks.

Common Internal Assessment

Year 12 Essential English and Mathematics students are presently preparing to undertake their Common Internal Assessment (CIA) in these coming weeks. The students' final results in Essential English or Essential Mathematics shall be determined based on their achievements in four internal assessments across Units 3 and 4. While schools develop three of these assessments, the fourth one, i.e. the CIA, is developed by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) and marked by schools. It is noteworthy that the upcoming examinations will be common for all students studying Essential English and Mathematics in Queensland. We extend our best wishes to all the students for their upcoming assessments.

Year 11 Subject Changes

In view of the academic progress of Year 11 students, it is important to note that they are scheduled to complete Unit 1 by Friday, 23rd May 2025. If any students intend to change their subject, they need to consult their Academic Coach first. Thereafter, they shall be directed to either the Careers Development Practitioner (Mrs. Porter), Director of Teaching and Learning, Mrs Natalie Bennett or myself, as the Deputy Principal - Curriculum, for further guidance. Please note that such a change must be made as soon as possible, before Unit 2 begins.

Year 12 Reports and Academic Interviews

The reports of Year 12 students, based on their IA1 and IA2, shall be sent out in Week 9. These results will be discussed in the upcoming Academic Interviews scheduled for all Year 12 students from the 28th to the 30th of May 2025. These interviews are important as they enable the students and their parents to deliberate upon ways to improve their results, track their academic goals, assess QCE eligibility, and deliberate upon future pathways.

The Non State Schools Transport Assistance Scheme (NSSTAS) provides financial assistance for families transporting students to non-state schools in Queensland.

The Non State Schools Transport Assistance Scheme is a joint initiative of the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC) and Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) and is funded by the Queensland Government.

Funds are limited and the level of assistance provided to eligible applicants depends on the program funds available in the relevant semester. To ensure our college community receives this support, we provide the associated information for this scheme.

The scheme has two programs:

1. Bus Fare Assistance: assisting families who pay more than the weekly threshold in bus or ferry fares.

2. Students with Disability: supporting students with a disability who have demonstrably different transport needs from other students of the same age.

Applications for Semester 1, 2025 open on 1 May 2025 and close on 31 May 2025. To learn more about the scheme, including eligibility for both programs, visit https://www.schooltransport.com.au.

White Card Course

The College has recently offered Year 10, 11 and 12 students the opportunity to participate in the Work Safely in the Construction Industry course. Successful completion of the course is awarded with a construction 'White Card'. This card and course are mandatory requirements under Queensland's Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008 for all persons wishing to carry out construction type work or frequenting a construction site. Well done, to all students, who participated in the course, we hope you found it beneficial.

Year 12 University Early Entry

It is that time of year when our Year 12 students considering applying to universityshould be starting to do their research and preparing for making applications to their universities and courses of choice.

Picture3.png

One way to apply to a university is through an early entry program. Early entry programs at universities are designed to offer students a chance to secure a place in a university course before they complete their final high school examinations or receive their ATAR. These programs often assess students based on criteria other than their final exam results or ATAR, such as their Year 11 or mid-Year 12 grades, extracurricular activities, and personal statements.

To help our Year 12 students navigate the early entry programs at university, they can access the Early Entry Guide, published by ‘Study Work Grow’. Many of these early entry programs are open for application or are opening soon and Year 12 students should apply before these programs close. Students can access the Early Entry Guide via the Careers page on Canvas, where they will find many other career resources.

Open Days and Careers Events

With Year 10 and Year 12 students making career and pathway decisions over the coming months, a great way to find information to help with decision making is through attending the many open days and careers events that are being held at this time of year. Our Careers department has published to Canvas an Open Days Guide to support students to plan their attendance at the open days for many providers of tertiary education.

Of course, this is not the only source of information for Careers events, we are regularly publishing our College Careers newsletter and also have a calendar of events on our Assumption College Careers webpage at www.acwcareers.com. Click here to go directly to the careers calendar ACW Careers Calendar of Events.

Congratulations to Our Inaugural Theatresports Team!John_Hodder.png

We are thrilled to announce the outstanding performance of our inaugural Theatresports team, consisting of Samuel Black, Kaiden Edmeades, Elliotte Kynaston, and Ella Winfield. The team recently competed against four other schools at Ipswich Girls Grammar School, showcasing their incredible talent and teamwork.

For those unfamiliar, Theatresports is a form of improvisational theatre where teams compete in various improvisation games and challenges. It's a dynamic and entertaining way to develop quick thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills.

Our team did an exceptional job, impressing both the audience and judges with their creativity and enthusiasm. Although they did not advance to the next round, they received the prestigious "Magic Moment" award for the most memorable moment of the night. This accolade was earned through Samuel Black's boisterous rendition of a whalesong, which captivated everyone present.

We are incredibly proud of Samuel, Kaiden, Elliotte, and Ella for their dedication and hard work. We also thank Ms Mia Gould for her dedication in training the team. They will continue training diligently throughout the year and aim to compete again next year, bringing even more magic to the stage.

Congratulations once again to our talented Theatresports team! We look forward to seeing your continued growth and success.
