Overview

Assumption College is committed to providing a holistic, inclusive, relevant and engaging curriculum for all students. Assumption College aims to ensure its graduates are future-focused, well-rounded young men and women ready to contribute actively to Australian society.

The College’s focus is on quality teaching, student engagement and maintaining effective communication with its parents and the broader community. Assumption College implements the relevant State and Federal Government legislative requirements regarding curriculum planning, teaching and assessing.

The College implements a curriculum which directs students towards a balanced and broad education. This curriculum has been developed across the National Curriculum learning areas of English, Mathematics, Religious Education, Science, Health and Physical Education (HPE), Digital Technologies, Design Technologies, History, Geography, Business and Economics, Civics and Citizenship and The Arts.

YEAR 7

In Year 7, students will study a range of Core and Elective subjects. Core subjects will be studied consistently throughout the year. Students will rotate through two elective options per term. This implies that by the end of Year 7, all students will have experienced all elective subject options.

CORE SUBJECTS:    English, Religious Education, Health and Physical Education; Mathematics; Science, History/Geography. 

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS:  Visual Art, Drama, ITD, Home Economics (Food Technology and Textile Design), Business & Civics, Spanish, Music, Digital Technologies.

YEAR 8 

In Year 8, students will study a range of Core and Elective subjects. Core subjects will be studied consistently throughout the year. Students will rotate through two elective options per term. This implies that by the end of Year 8, all students will have experienced all elective subject options.

CORE SUBJECTS:  English, Religious Education, Health and Physical Education; Mathematics; Science, History/Geography.  

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS:  Visual Art, Drama, ITD, Home Economics (Food Technology and Textile Design), Business & Civics, Spanish, Music, Digital Technologies.

YEAR 9

In Year 9, students will study a range of Core and Elective subjects. Core subjects will be studied consistently throughout the year and remain the same as those offered through Years 7 and 8. Students will also select two elective options per semester. These options (excluding Agricultural Science) can be selected in both semesters, allowing students to trial several options, or continue studying a preferred elective all year. This allows for skill development that can be pertinent to senior subject selection. All Year 9 students participate in a Careers program which is timetabled at two periods of study per ten-day timetable cycle. This allows students the opportunity to study job skills and career pathways, and engage in work experience, with emphasis on their own individual career pathway and the formulation of their own get SET Plans.

YEAR 10

Year 10 students study a range of Core subjects, as well as two elective subjects. The core subjects enable students to continue their development of skills in key learning areas, whilst the range of elective subjects are aimed to introduce students to a variety of elective areas in preparation for choices in senior courses of study.  All Year 10 students participate in a Careers course which is timetabled at two periods of study per ten-day timetable cycle. This allows students the opportunity to study job skills and career pathways, and engage in work experience, with emphasis on their own individual career pathway and the formulation of their own SET Plans.

CORE SUBJECTS:   English, Mathematics, Religious Education, History, Health and Physical Education. 

ELECTIVE SUBJECTS: Biology, Chemistry, General Science, Visual Art, Drama, ITD, Business & Civics, Music, Agricultural Science, Spanish, Academic Physical Education (Semester 1), Hospitality (Semester 1), Digital Technologies (Semester 1), Accounting (Semester 2), Economics (Semester 2), Modern History (Semester 2), Physics (Semester 2), Specialist Mathematics (Semester 2), and Textile Design (Semester 2).

SENIOR SCHOOLING

Assumption College provides tailored, individualised support to all its students in selecting the appropriate senior schooling pathway. The College’s Student Pathways team ensures that all students have access to career counselling, information sessions and support to aid in the selection of subjects and courses that will best prepare them for the post-school pathway of their choosing.

In Years 11 and 12, all students are required to study either Religion & Ethics or Study of Religion; either Literature, English or Essential English; and either of Mathematical Methods or General Mathematics or Essential Mathematics. As well as these three core subjects, students are able to select three (3) elective choices from the following:

General Subjects: Accounting, Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Design, Drama, Economics, Modern History, Music, Physical Education, Physics, Visual Art, Specialist Mathematics.

Applied Subjects: Certificate III Business, Certificate III Fitness, Certificate III Sport and Recreation, Certificate II Rural Operations, Certificate II & III Health Services, Certificate II Rural Operations, Engineering Skills, Early Childhood Studies, Hospitality Practices, Industrial Technology Skills.
